Skin care can be one of those perplexing topics. At the clinic, we often get asked: “Does it matter what order I apply my skin care products”? The answer is “Yes”! This quick-hit blog post will explain why.
In General
As a rule of thumb, you should apply your products from thinnest consistency to thickest, or from liquid to cream. After you clean your face, first use products with ingredients that penetrate the skin—like antioxidants and serums—and finish with ones that sit on top of the skin—like moisturizers and sunscreens
Your morning routine should be about protecting your skin from sun, pollution, and the elements; think sunscreen and moisturizers. Reserve treatment products like retinols, for example, for your nighttime routine.
1. Cleanse
Start each skin care routine with a cleansing of the skin. In the morning, it serves to “prepare the canvas” so your skin wakes up and looks its best. In the evening, this ritual serves to take away any dirt and debris that has accumulated during your day.
2. Correct
What you choose to use to address specific skin concerns will usually depend on your age. Serums—super-concentrated, nutrient-dense treatments—will address different things: hydration, wrinkles, pigment, redness, acne, etc. If you’re interested in learning more, read Skin Care Products: Dr. Suess’ All-Ages Guide.
3. Hydrate
Every single person we know needs moisturizer (even those with oily skin)! It acts as a protective coating against harsh outside conditions. Plus, it locks in your serums and treatments, smooths out the surface of your skin, and lets you glow—with or without makeup!
4. Protect
If there’s one thing I want everyone to do, it’s this: wear sunscreen. Always! It provides the best protection against UVA and UVB rays and should be the last step in your daytime skin care routine. Protecting your face is the best thing you can do for your skin!
